Hawaiian people lived closed to the Gods, greatly honoring Aumakua. With the support of Gods they were preforming healing rituals.

Pono Rules

Before white people "discovered" Hawaii, main rule of Hawaiian Ohana was Pono. Pono means clarity of intentions, healthy rules of behaciour, which generaly support health of society.

When in Ohana problems occured, somebody choose to lie or acted agains other people goodness, Kahuna was making the statement, what the person acts agains Aumakua. Lack of support of Aumakua meant for ohana serious problems. With great engagement all people in Ohana were motivated to bring harmony between people and Gods.

When physical problems occured, Kahuna was asked for help. His job was to find the roots of the problem. First Kahuna would contact Aumakua, and the answer would come in dreams, visions and symbols. Aumakua were helping choose the certain medicine.

Pono actions were required to be respected by all Ohana members - including high chiefs and shamans as well as oridinary people. The real pono actions were called "maoli pono".

If you desired something which belonged to anther person, Kahuna would work with you to bring the inner ballance by letting this desire go away. High values character quality was patience- ho'omanawanui.
Pono -care about keeping values high, himility, lack of "ego", responsibility.
Pono - in parthership would mean great care about children. Rasing children was highly important in Hawaiian culture.
Pono - would only mean the control of entertainment and pleasure.
Against pono rule were such actions as stealing, lie, desire of other people things etc.

Aloha!
